Pacific Language School (PLS) has specialized in teaching English to Japanese children for over 50 years. The PLS System, our constantly-evolving program, uses predominantly original materials, both in-class and for homework. The system is also used by over 50 independently-owned sister schools in Japan who look to us for leadership, seminar training and continuous, cooperative curriculum development.
While the majority of our classes are K-6, PLS students range from infants to seniors. Teachers' schedules typically consist of a variety of these classes, including small groups (average 4-8) and one-on-one lessons. There may also be opportunities to teach at private kindergartens and elementary schools that PLS provides teachers for.
This is a five-day position, Tuesday to Saturday. Weekly working hours, including lesson preparation and record-keeping, are 36.25 hours, typically from afternoon to evening.
There are annual paid vacations for spring, Golden Week, summer and winter, as well as flexible paid leave.
A transportation allowance is offered on top of regular salary.
There is a three-month probationary period on a slightly reduced salary.
Ongoing training is provided through seminars, weekly teachers' meetings, and peer assistance. There are opportunities for advancement in teacher training and material development.
In your cover letter, please be sure to include what you enjoy about teaching, and what you believe makes you a good teacher.
Applicants who pass screening will be contacted by email to set up an initial interview on Zoom. After meeting online, applicants may be invited to a second interview and class observation at our main school in Suginami, Tokyo.
The successful applicant will start training as soon as possible.
