Position: Academic Advisor
Department: Academic Advising Center / Undergraduate Program
Position type: Full-time
Report to: Director, Academic Advising Center
Work hours: 9:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday
Visa Requirement: Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) is able to sponsor a visa for this position.
Salary & benefit: Salary commensurate with experience, plus transportation.
Eleven days paid vacation in the first fiscal year (July-June) increasing to 20 days after 6 years of employment, plus 5 paid “personal and sick days” each year. In addition, approximately two weeks company-wide break over Christmas/New Year, Japanese social insurance and pension, commuting allowance, and tuition benefits for Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) programs.

Overview of position:
As a unit reporting directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Academic Advising Center (AAC) supports TUJ’s undergraduate students after acceptance until graduation in achieving academic goals by providing academic assistance in various ways. The academic advisor is responsible for providing students with individual consultation to assist in choosing appropriate courses, majors, and other education opportunities based on their interests, goals, and program of study. The advisor will inform students of university policies, procedures, and requirements. If qualified, the advisor may be assigned an additional specialization and/or may also work as the special assistant to the director of the AAC in response to the university’s various academic initiatives.

Primary responsibilities:
-Advise undergraduate students in selecting appropriate courses in all TUJ majors at all levels.
-Inform students of university policies and regulations.
-Maintain updated advising materials.
-Organize and conduct new student orientation and advising.
-Conduct graduation reviews and final clearances.
-Assist in the Academic Advising Center’s daily operation, as assigned by the director.
-Assist with other tasks of the Academic Advising Center, as assigned by the director.
-Organize advising events to help students develop independence in pursuing their academic careers by learning more about majors offered, curriculum, policies, and regulations.

Required qualifications:
-Master’s degree. The Academic Advising Center often works with students who are considering applying to graduate schools.
-Knowledge and understanding of the U.S. higher education system.
-Excellent communication skills (oral and writing). The successful candidate will be expected to work with a diverse student body as well as staff & faculty in a multi-ethnic/multicultural environment.
-Native or near-native oral and writing proficiency in both English and Japanese. This position frequently requires both oral and written communications with Japanese-speakers.
-Proficient computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
-Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision, including prioritization and multi-tasking.
-Experience living in Japan.
-A team player who is detail-oriented, student-centered, independent, and outgoing.

Preferred qualifications:
-Degree in a related field: MBA, Developmental/Educational Psychology, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, TESOL, and/or Student Affairs/Personnel strongly preferred.
-Experiences with Banner@ by Ellucian and Cognos Reporting System preferred.
-Study abroad experience in higher education.
-Experience working with a diverse student body with different needs.
-Knowledge and understanding of Japan’s higher education system strongly preferred.
-Experience in academic advising of Art, Business, Communications, or Liberal Arts disciplines.
