Responsibilities: Teaching English to junior and senior high school students through a comprehension-based communicative approach.
SEG is a juku for junior and senior high school students, which is well known for teaching English through a communicative and comprehension-based approach. We are particularly well known for our extensive reading program, which complements our oral communication program.
Our oral communication program is inspired by methodologies like TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), ALG (Automatic Language Growth), and The Natural Approach. Please note that this ad is for positions in the oral communication part of the program, NOT for the extensive reading part of the program.
Trainee Stage:
From October to February, new teachers will be trainees. During this time they will assist SEG teachers in the classroom. Trainees will be paid 3,000 yen per hour to assist. Trainees will also attend training sessions. Training will be paid at 2,500 yen per hour.
We would like to do our paid new teacher training in the morning and afternoon from Dec 26 to 29. As a backup, we can also do training from Jan 4 to 8 (with a holiday on the 7th). If you can't be available for either of these sessions, you can still apply. If your application is strong, we'll try to work out an alternate schedule.
Teacher Stage:
In March, teachers who successfully complete the trainee stage will be able to become lead teachers. The hourly rate for teachers begins at 5,000 yen per hour. There are annual raises. It is possible for hourly rates to reach 6,000 yen per hour or higher.
Teachers will continue to work their through our training system as we strongly believe in ongoing professional development.
Our classes are held in the evenings and on Saturdays at the following times:
1) Monday 17:15 to 20:15
2) Tuesday 17:15 to 20:15
3) Wednesday 17:15 to 20:15
4) Thursday 17:15 to 20:15
5) Friday 17:15 to 20:15
6) Saturday 14:00 to 17:00
7) Saturday 17:40 to 20:40
We would like new trainees to assist in one or two of these seven blocks.
We have a different schedule during the school breaks - March, July/August, December. During these times, we run 4-day or 5-day intensive courses for students.
We are looking for candidates who can meet the following criteria:
1) 3 years of junior/senior high school teaching experience in Japan
2) Experience planning and teaching original lessons
3) University degree in linguistics, language teaching, or a foreign language
4) English teaching qualification
5) N3 or higher ability in Japanese (if you don’t speak Japanese, you can list other languages that you have learned; the point of this is to show that you have language-learning experience)
It is not necessary to meet all of the above criteria, but the more of them that you meet, the better your chances will be.
We don't expect applicants to be familiar with The Natural Approach, TPRS, or comprehension-based approaches generally. We will train you. But if you do happen to have experience with this kind of teaching, please mention this in your cover letter.
We’re looking for teachers who are interested in language teaching as a long-term career and who are interested in professional development and learning new skills. As we take great pains to make sure that our approach is consistent with modern linguistic and SLA theory, we're looking for teachers who have studied linguistics and SLA. For teachers who don't have this background, we expect them to increase their professional knowledge in these areas. We will provide resources and training.
As well, we prioritize teachers who are language learners. We believe that it's very important for a language teacher to be a language learner. If you haven't yet learned a foreign langauge, we can provide you with resources and guidance to help with your Japanese study.
If you are interested in the position, please write us a personalized cover letter explaining which of our five criteria you meet, your general approach to language teaching and language learning, as well as any other factors that you think would make you a good candidate for this position.
Thank you for your application.
