Description

Hello! Are you someone interested in Japan and its culture? Do you enjoy working with children? Are you making effort to learn Japanese, so you can communicate with people here? Are you willing to get a deeper understanding of English, so you can help students understand and use it better? If you said yes to all four, this job may be for you!

The job starts in mid-April 2021, and is teaching English at a small conversation school in the city of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka prefecture. Hamamatsu has a large inland lake and borders the beach, with some of the best surfing in the country. Just north are low mountains with hiking trails.

The school owner is me, Dan Frost. I'm from the state of Oregon, U.S.A. I'll soon be 67 years old, and came here in 1992. I'm married to a Japanese woman who is a kindergarten principal. We have two grown children, my daughter married and living near Tokyo, and my son living with us.

The school is two classrooms on the first floor of my house. I started it in 1998, and currently it has just over 90 students, ranging in age from 4 to 84. Because of Covid-19, some students take classes online, and others come to the school while using precautions such as washing hands and wearing masks.

Classes are from afternoon through evening, plus 2 or 3 mornings. The teaching hours per week are between twenty to twenty-three classes. Children's classes are 50 minutes and adults' 60 minutes. We allow up to six students per class. There's a yard in back of the house for doing outdoor games during children's classes.

An apartment for a single person is provided, at approximately 57,000 yen a month. Key money is paid by the school. The apartment is less than 15 minutes walking distance to the school. In about the same time you can walk to a Costco store, an ice rink, swimming pool and fitness center. You would need to take care of your own health insurance.

I have a Master’s degree in teaching English to young learners, and am trying to develop a program for learning, through using English itself, instead of relying mainly on translation to Japanese. In almost 30 years of teaching English in Japanese universities, as well as junior and senior high schools, I find teaching at my own school far more rewarding and meaningful. Students make effort to use English in small classes.

If you are keen to learn new ideas and skills for teaching English to people in Japan, you would gain a lot from this position. Being able to guide both children and adults to use only English in class is very important. Being empathetic, cheerful and flexible are also valuable qualities. I will take full responsibility for training and guiding you as a new teacher. Please consider this opportunity!
