We are recruiting teachers for our oral communication program, which complements our extensive reading program. Please note that our extensive reading classes are taught by Japanese teachers. We are not recruiting teachers for the extensive reading program.

At SEG, we avoid the rote learning, pattern practice, and grammar drills that are common in many schools. We base our program on current findings in linguistic theory and second language acquisition research. We do teach grammar in our oral communication program, but we don't do so in a traditional way.

Our oral communication program is inspired by methodologies like The Natural Approach, Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS), Automatic Language Growth (ALG), Focal Skills, and Processing Instruction.

As you can see from the methodologies listed above, we prioritize comprehension first and foremost. As students progress through our program, production plays a larger and larger role in our classes. Eventually, with senior high school students, we engage in academic study of various topics related to language and communication.

We’re looking for teachers who are interested in language teaching as a long-term career and who are interested in professional development and learning new skills.

We are looking for candidates who can meet the following criteria:
1) At least 3 years of teaching experience in Japan with junior and/or senior high school students
2) University degree in linguistics, language teaching, or a foreign language
3) Familiarity with comprehension-based language teaching
4) N3 or higher ability in Japanese (if you don’t speak Japanese, you can list other languages that you have learned to show your language learning experience)

It is not necessary to meet all of the above criteria, but the more of them that you meet, the better your chances will be.

If you are interested in the position, please write us a personalized cover letter explaining which of our four criteria you meet as well as any other factors that you think would make you a good candidate for this position.

As well, in your cover letter, please include a lesson plan for the following situation:

Choose a grammatical structure and prepare a lesson plan for a 50-minute lesson that would be appropriate for typical students in the first year of junior high school. Your lesson should be based around communicative activities which involve interaction between you with the students. Although the lesson should not obviously be a grammar lesson, it should be intended to introduce or clarify a grammatical point in English. We would like to see how you present a grammatical concept in a meaningful context. Ideally, students should not perceive this as a grammar lesson.

Thank you for your application.
