Description

About Tokyo Academics:

Tokyo Academics is the passion project of a constellation of teachers, researchers, and academics from around the world. Since 2012, we’ve evolved from a few university friends to a growing number of part-time and full-time individuals located in Tokyo, as well as working remotely. We are an organization of experts deeply passionate about helping students meet their potential and capture the opportunities of the future.

We are looking for a professional College Admissions Counselor to help students make decisions around their current high school trajectory and future college options, preparing them for the college admissions process.

We have flexible hours to fit the schedule. Full-time, part-time, remote, and/or in-person work arrangements are available, so please inquire if you are interested!

This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced startup of 80+ team members around the world. You will play a significant role in helping the students to build their future by identifying strengths, providing opportunities to learn about.

You will have two main responsibilities:

Counseling:

Your primary responsibility as counselor will be to work with students in a 1-on-1 format to help them make decisions around their current high school trajectory and future college options. You will be providing guidance and advice on a wide range of topics, including (but not limited to):

・High School Course Selection
・Extracurricular Activities/Independent Projects
・Building a College List
・Identifying potential passions/majors/career interest

Given the wide range of student/family situations that potentially arise, successful hires will undergo in-depth training to gain a better understanding of Japan’s high schools, as well as Tokyo Academics’ college counseling process.

Teaching:

Given the seasonal nature of college admissions, our overseas counseling hires will also be required to take on some high school teaching, as demonstrated expertise in test prep and high school courses adds value as a counselor and also helps each individual counselor develop their own pipeline of students. Interested applicants will be expected to demonstrate mastery in at least two of the following:

・All sections of the SAT/ACT tests
・Two or more advanced level high school STEM courses (AP/IB)
・Two or more advanced level high school Humanities courses (AP/IB)

Our ideal candidate:

・Graduate from a top tier U.S. or U.K. University
・Very interested in working and living in Japan
・Have a track record of achievement in school academics and standardized testing
・Have a previous college/admissions counseling experience, with demonstrated success in helping students receive offers to top schools
・Passionate about mentorship, about engaging with students beyond their academics and playing a critical role in their success and character growth
・Have strong communication and collaboration skills, and can thrive in a start-up environment
・Agile, and able to respond to new information quickly and decisively

Benefits:

・Competitive compensation package
・Bonuses based on company growth
・20 days of paid time off per year
・Join a growing bootstrapped company with a lot of potential for growth
・Autonomy to implement ideas and have a significant impact

Work hours:

・20 to 40hrs/week, flexible schedule
・Working remotely, but must be available for meetings during business hours (10am-7pm Japan Standard Time)
