Tokyo International Progressive School (TIPS) is a small alternative school for students with mild to moderate educational and/or social needs. We are a co-educational, non-religious school that currently consists of 42 students from Grade 4 to 12, a Principal, seven teachers, two specialists, and two administrative staff. Our students and staff originate from all over the world (currently 20 countries) and add a truly international flavor to the TIPS family.
We are located in the residential Tokyo suburb of Meguro-ku. TIPS is close to downtown attractions and recreational areas including Rinshinomori Park.
Since its inception in 2000, a primary focus of TIPS has been to provide support for students with mild to moderate educational and/or social needs. Today, it is the leading alternative for families who want services tailored to suit the individual learning needs of their children. TIPS limits core class delivery to no more than ten students. Individual attention, a Learning Support Program that permeates the school, and a family atmosphere formally structured by a Teacher Advisory Program all help to ensure student success. A full roster of complementary Courses and extracurricular activities completes our students’ school experience. Students are engaged in a prescribed program of studies in Math, Science, Social Studies and English from grades five to ten. Students in grades eleven and twelve begin coursework in partnership with the University of Nebraska High School which leads to a High School Diploma generated from the United States. TIPS graduates typically attend postsecondary institutions/colleges in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.
Principal Job Description
Tokyo International Progressive School is seeking a Principal with a proven record of success in educational leadership with professional knowledge and a deep understanding of special needs students and their parents. This person must be an exceptional leader who will work hand-in-hand with the TIPS Administrative Team and the Board Chair to promote Special Education in the school and the Tokyo community. A new facility to provide for more students and expanded programs is our long-term goal and will involve the efforts of the new Principal.

Master degree from an accredited institution
Formal qualification (e.g., certificate) in Special Education from an accredited institution
Teacher certification and/or educational administration certification
- Minimum of 5 years as a successful classroom teacher.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in a school leadership position.
- Minimum of 5 years experience working with students with diverse special needs, including at-risk students and those with exceptional needs.
- Experience teaching in a diverse linguistic and cultural setting.
- Computer skills for word processing, data management, and communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work hand in hand with Board Chair to ensure that the school operates in accordance with its stated goals and vision.
- Advocate for the Mission and Vision of TIPS within the school community and to the public at large.
- Provide educational leadership in the area of Special Education and provide opportunities for Professional Development for teaching staff.
- Establish clear goals and be committed to continuous school improvement in academics and extracurricular activities.
- Nurture a school environment that perpetuates the feeling of ‘family’ among teachers, support staff, students and parents.
- Be responsible for the recruitment, selection, assignment, orientation, deployment, and evaluation of all teachers, or delegate these functions, where appropriate, to relevant TIPS administrative staff members.
- Support all members of the staff in professional matters, ensuring that they have adequate supervision and guidance while supporting teachers’ individual authority.
- Supervise the delivery of the approved course of academic studies and provide support to teachers to facilitate successful course delivery.
- Supervise the assessment of students and reporting procedure to parents in relation to student progress.
- Lead and be accountable for decisions related to student expulsion (exclusion), promotion and graduation.
- Be responsible for student admissions and the collection of pertinent documents relevant to the academic, psychological and/or psychiatric records of incoming students to assist the school to meet the needs of those students.
- Be accountable for the organization and successful implementation of the summer school program.
- Operate the school within an approved educational budget, provide input to the TIPS Board with regard to major expenditures and facility upgrades, and submit appropriate financial expenditures to the Board.
- Oversee the purchase and efficient management of school resources to meet the requirements of student learning.
- Ensure the school’s computerized systems are updated and maintained, including the school website, online grading system, and internal network.
- Be responsible for maintenance of the facility and grounds of the school.
- Submit staff salary schedules to the TIPS Board for approval according to TIPS Board timelines and ensure timely distribution of Board approved teacher and staff contracts, ensuring that the conditions therein are met.
- Remain current with the changes and developments in Special Education theories and practices.
- Consider reasonable opinions held by various parties in the school community when making decisions concerning those groups and individuals.
- Be the final arbitrator in school policy and curriculum matters and ensure that all documents are updated and maintained.
- Encourage parental participation in their child’s school life via the Parent/Staff Association, parent orientation, and other means.
- Provide substitute teaching cover as needed.
- Actively engage with students to understand and support their daily learning experience. (e.g. teaching classes)
Compensation and Benefits
The salary and benefits will be dependent on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
• Salary: 600,000 yen per month (for the first two-year contract)
• Increment: 15,000 yen per month from Year 3 to Year 8.
• Home Leave Allowance: flight ticket fare to home country once a year by economy class (Principal and his/her spouse, First 5 years of contract)

Note: International Package will last five years maximum and will automatically move to Local package from the 6th year of employment.
Housing Establishment Allowance explanation:
TIPS will contribute a one-time housing establishment allowance up to 500,000 yen (750,000 yen for teaching couples) towards the initial establishment cost for the apartment, including deposit, key money, realtor’s fee, insurance and other necessary costs for renting but not including rent nor utilities.
Teachers need to pay the excess amount if the total cost is more than the limit of this allowance.
Initial costs covered by the housing establishment allowance and the excess amount paid by the teachers are non-refundable.
The deposit money is withheld by TIPS to be used for Genjo-Kaifuku (restoration to original condition) when the employee terminates the lease contract and vacates the premises.
If necessary, TIPS will act as a guarantor in securing housing.
In the case of resignation or termination during the initial employment contract teachers are required to repay the establishment allowance and relocation allowance.
Teachers who take over an existing apartment (previously occupied by an ex-teacher), have the option to move to another place during the first year of employment, using this allowance.
The right to use this allowance expires by the end of your first year just prior to Teacher Orientation Week in August.
Housing Allowance explanation:
TIPS will pay a housing allowance of 100,000 yen to assist in the payment of rent. Certain restrictions apply based on the status at the time of hire (Local/International Hire) and the Insurance/Pension you are going to enroll to.
In the case that the contract is not renewed, this housing allowance will be paid up till July 15th or until they vacate the apartment, whichever is earlier.
Teachers whose spouse or partner has housing fully funded by his/her employer, are not eligible for the Housing Allowance. Teachers whose spouse or partner’s company supporting housing allowance need to submit the proof of housing allowance from their company.
