Description

NOTE: This job application requires a personalized cover letter answering questions given in the job description. Any applications without a personalized cover letter will be discarded.

SEG is a juku for junior and senior high school students which is well-known for teaching English through extensive reading and oral communication. We have openings for full-time and semi-full-time native English teachers in our oral communication and writing program beginning in February, March or April 2017.

While we are a juku, we do not focus on test preparation. We have a dynamic and communicative program which is based on modern principles of second language acquisition. We’re looking for teachers who are interested in language teaching as a long-term career and who are interested in professional development and learning new skills.

Responsibilities: Teaching English to junior and senior high school students. Working in a team with other full-time teachers to develop curriculum materials.

Contract period: February, March or April 2017 to February 2018 (renewable)

Pay: 300,000 yen to 360,000 yen per month
(3,600, 000 yen to 4,320,000 yen per year)
Health Insurance provided
Commuting expenses provided

Working Hours: 13:00-21:30 including a one hour break, which may be the first hour of the shift. On most days, teachers can come a little late or can leave a little early.

Days Off: Sunday and one particular weekday (excluding Saturday)

Annual paid vacation days: 23 days per year
(Holidays are subject to certain restrictions. This will be explained during the interview process.)

Nearest station: Shinjuku or Yokohama

Requirements for the position: NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER
At least two years' experience as an English teacher
Bachelor's degree or higher
Currently residing in Japan with valid work visa
TEFL/TESL Certificate Preferred
Some Japanese ability preferred

If you are interested in the position, please write us a personalized cover letter answering the following questions about a potential class at SEG. In your answers, please bear in mind that we’re looking for teachers who can explain/model vocab and grammar in a simple way that is easy for students to understand.

Assume that you are teaching an 80-minute lesson to a group of 1st year junior high school students. They have been learning English for less than one year and they are being introduced to the present perfect for the first time. The students have a low-beginner level of English. You may assume that the students have already been exposed to present simple, present continuous, past simple and past continuous structures, although they will not have been taught those grammatical terms.

1) Given this situation, which usage of the present perfect would you choose to focus on in this lesson and why would you choose that usage as opposed to the others?

2) How would you present or demonstrate the meaning of the present perfect usage that you chose in your answer to question 1?

3) What sort of activities would you do in order to solidify their understanding of the usage of the present perfect that you selected?

4) What degree of mastery of the present perfect usage you selected would you expect students to have at the end of the class?

Only candidates who pass this initial screening will be invited to come for an interview. We plan to hold our initial round of interviews between November 21st and 28th.

Thank you for your application.
