Description

NOTE: This job application requires a PERSONALIZED cover letter. Any applications without a personalized cover letter will not be considered.

SEG is a juku for junior and senior high school students, which is well known for teaching English through a communicative and comprehension-based approach.

We are particularly well known for our extensive reading program, which complements our oral communication program.

Although we are a juku, we don't do grammar lectures. Our oral communication program is inspired by methodologies like The Natural Approach and TPRS. Please note that this ad is for positions in the oral communication part of the program, NOT for the extensive reading part of the program.

You can read more about SEG on our websites.

Contract period: September/October to February 2023 (renewable in March)

- Nearest station: Shinjuku
- Commuting expenses are provided.
- Annual pay raises.
- As this is a part-time position, visa sponsorship is not available. But visa sponsorship will be available for teachers who become full-time in the future.

Responsibilities: Teaching English to junior and senior high school students through a comprehension-based communicative approach.

From October to February, new teachers will be trainees. During this time they will attend weekly training sessions, which will be paid at 1,500 yen per hour. Also, they will assist SEG native teachers in class. This trainee assisting will be paid at 3,000 yen per hour.

In March, trainees who successfully complete their training will be able to become lead teachers. The hourly rate for lead teachers begins at 5,000 yen per hour. You will teach a mix of classes as lead teacher and assistant teacher in the 2023/24 academic year.

We are looking for new part-time teachers who are interested in working their way towards becoming full-time in the future.

Our classes are held in the evenings and on Saturdays at the following times:

1) Monday 17:15 to 20:15
2) Tuesday 17:15 to 20:15
3) Wednesday 17:15 to 20:15
4) Thursday 17:15 to 20:15
5) Friday 17:15 to 20:15
6) Saturday 14:00 to 17:00
7) Saturday 17:40 to 20:40

We would like new trainees to assist in one or two of these seven blocks.

We have a different schedule during the school breaks.

We are looking for candidates who can meet the following criteria:
1) 3 years of junior/senior high school teaching experience in Japan
2) Experience planning and teaching original lessons
3) University degree in linguistics, language teaching, or a foreign language
4) English teaching qualification
5) N3 or higher ability in Japanese (if you don’t speak Japanese, you can list other languages that you have learned; the point of this is to show that you have language-learning experience)

It is not necessary to meet all of the above criteria, but the more of them that you meet, the better your chances will be.

We don't expect applicants to be familiar with The Natural Approach, TPRS, or comprehension-based approaches generally. We will train you in this approach. But if you do happen to have experience with this kind of teaching, please mention this in your cover letter.

We’re looking for teachers who are interested in language teaching as a long-term career and who are interested in professional development and learning new skills. As we take great pains to make sure that our approach is consistent with modern linguistic and SLA theory, we expect teachers to develop their own professional knowledge in these areas.

If you are interested in the position, please write us a personalized cover letter explaining which of our five criteria you meet, your general approach to language teaching and language learning, as well as any other factors that you think would make you a good candidate for this position.

Thank you for your application.
