Description

A teacher assistant works cooperatively with educators and professionals to provide an environment that nurtures, stimulates and guides each child’s development.

A teacher assistant assists staff in the implementation of an activity based educational program that supports a holistic approach to the care and development of children from 2 years to 5 years of age.

Duties and Responsibilities

•Prepares the classroom for lessons
•Helps the teacher maintain records for each child
•Helps children who need extra support to complete tasks
•Alerts the teacher to special needs of individual children
•Helps teachers to plan learning activities and complete records
•Supports teachers in managing class behaviour
•Supervises group activities
•Comforts children who are upset or have had accidents
•Clears away materials and equipment after lessons
•Maintains a clean classroom
•Helps with outings and sports events
•Participates in staff meetings and training sessions
•Helps teachers maintain a safe environment for children
•Understands the confidentiality nature of working in an educational setting

Depending on the students’ needs, teaching assistants may be asked to work one-on-one or in small groups. Their duties may also include leading a class when the lead teacher is absent.

Minimum Qualifications

•Ability to speak and write English
•At least 2 years work experience in an Early Childhood setting
•Preferred to have coursework in early childhood education
•Preferred to have valid first aid qualifications
•Demonstrated ability to use computers, copiers and software
•General knowledge of daily classroom routines

Working Hours:

•Monday to Friday
•Maximum 30 hours per week
