Description

We are currently looking for a qualified applicant for a full-time English conversation teaching position in Okayama starting in July 2020 or sooner.

This is a position at small, community-based, family-run language schools, so the class sizes are much smaller than what you would find in a public school. If you have a lot of energy, have passion for teaching English, and want to make a difference, this is the right match for you!

About us

We have had strong support from our local community since 1999. Most of our students stay with us for many years, with several of them continuing for over 15 years! Many of our students who started learning with us have gone on to top universities in Japan and even colleges overseas. You can be part of their academic success and personal endeavors. What could give you more satisfaction as a teacher than teaching a language that changes students’ worlds?

Our students’ age range varies from 2 to 60+ years old and you will have a chance to understand your students’ different needs and proficiency levels. About 75% of your students will be between the age of 2 and 12. Another 20% will be teens, and the rest will be adult students. The class sizes are relatively small at 4-6 students per group on average with a maximum class size at 8.

We have a group of foreign teachers and Japanese staff working at two school locations. One is in Okayama City and the other is in Akaiwa City, a 30 minute drive from Okayama. You will be asked to teach in Akaiwa a few times a week. As Akaiwa is a pretty rural place, having a driver’s licence is necessary. We have a company car that you can use for commuting between schools and doing some local shopping and sightseeing. You will be always working alongside other foreign teachers and Japanese staff.

About teaching

We have created our own series of teaching materials and lesson plans in-house, and your feedback on how the plans worked in your classes is greatly appreciated. As you get used to teaching lessons here , you will have the chance to be part of our curriculum and lesson plan creation.

You will meet your students weekly. You will be in charge of your lessons and be able to see the impact your teaching has on your students!
We have pre-made lesson plans for all of your group lessons for all ages.
With very young learners, the teaching style has to be quite active. Expect to do a bit of singing and dancing and do high-energy activities with your younger students. We have a lot of flashcards and prompts like plastic fruits and animals and educational games to keep your students engaged in your lessons.

With 4 to 12 year-old students, you will be teaching them reading and phonics as well as conversational English courses.

With teen students, we have our own original speaking, reading, and composition courses. Our approach to our high school students is both practical and academic and we have had the pleasure of helping students get into top universities in Japan and overseas colleges. You will be talking about differences in societies, philosophies and cultures as well as current topics in the world news. We use some of the teens lesson ideas for adult classes to have more meaningful and engaging conversations with your students. Our adult students are very happy with the content of our lessons.

With private students, you will be working on their specific needs, such as presentation prep, interview prep, high level returnees’ lessons. You can usually customize the lesson plans for group lessons for private students or you can draw your lesson plans from the wide range of textbooks and resources that we have on hand, and you will have the support of experienced teachers.
