Description

We are currently looking for an English instructor with a science background for RED programs.

【About RED programs】
The RED programs started in 2014 and have been providing English immersion programs where students learn science in English. The goal of the programs is to develop individuals who can discuss scientific topics in English. The curriculum is focused to foster skills of Research (R), Essay writing (E), and Discussion (D) in English in three years, enabling students to become active in the world stage through science in future. RED programs are not only for Musashi High School and Junior High School students but also for students from other schools in greater Tokyo area.

【Structure of RED programs】
RED programs started with three classes; G1 class for English beginners, mainly first year junior high school students, G2 class for mainly second and third year junior high school students, and G3 class for mainly third year junior high school students and first year high school students. Last September, we newly added “Advanced Program” for higher level students who are willing to study abroad.
Class size: maximum 25 students
Academic year: Term 1 from September to November, Term 2 from January to March, and Term 3 from April to June
Lessons: Two evenings a week, 18:30-20:30
Each class is taught by an instructor along with four to five Teaching Assistants (TA). This means that there is usually one TA per four to five students.

We are currently looking for an instructor who will teach G3 class in Term 3 (April 8, 2021 through June 2021). Lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 18:30 to 20:00. This class has 15 students and four TAs.

Based on your performance in Term 3, we are hoping you to continue to teach one of these classes in the new academic year starting September 2021. Hopefully we would involve you in RED programs for long term.

<Job description/responsibilities>
・ Teaching G3 class in Term 3 of the academic year of 2020-2021
・ Starting April 8, 2021 to June 24, 2021.(No classes from April 29 to May 6)
・ Make up class scheduled on June 29, in case of temporary class cancellation
・ Twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 18:30 to 20:30
・ Total 20 times (19 lessons and one presentation & parents day)
・ The current number of students in the G3 class is 15, and there are four TAs.

<Duties>
・ Make lesson preparation in consultation with the RED supervisor and other instructors regarding class content, materials, etc. as necessary
・ Hold a meeting with TAs before each class (30 to max. 45 minutes)
・ Hold a meeting with the TAs after class (max. 15 minutes), if necessary
・ Check students’ attendance and report to RED office staff if there are absent students without notice
・ Prepare classroom environment including desk and chair settings before each class and clean up and restore classroom environment after each class
・ Write monthly reports for parents
・ Write “Teacher's Feedback” for each student in the middle and end of the term
・ Attend weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the RED supervisor, instructors, and RED office staff
・ Talk to parents who are invited to the presentation at the end of the term

<Others>
・ Attend a meeting with the RED supervisor (and others) before the first class on Thursday, April 8. (date and time to be discussed, paid)
・ May be asked to participate in student recruitment information sessions (paid)

<COVID-19 countermeasures>
・ Ensure that students, TAs, and the instructor himself/herself wear masks
・ Supervise students, TAs, and the instructor himself/herself to use hand sanitizer when entering the classroom
・ Ensure that students, TAs, and the instructor himself/herself keep social distance
・ Sanitize desks, chairs and other equipment in the classroom after each class with TAs’ help
・ There is a possibility that you will be asked to conduct classes online using Zoom due to the COVID-19 declaration of a state of emergency.
・ Take other necessary measures against COVID-19.

【Requirements】
・ Native level English
・ Must have a university degree in natural science *master degree preferable
・ Must have experience teaching young students
・ Must be able to respond flexibly to students who will have various English abilities and encourage them to love both science and English
・ Must be professional, hardworking, passionate and love working with children
・ Must currently reside in Japan (Visa sponsorship will not be provided)

【Working Hours/Work Place】
・ 3.75 hours per one lesson

- Lesson: 2 hours (18:30 - 20:30)
- Lesson preparation: 1 hour/lesson
- Pre-lesson meeting with TAs (Min.30 minutes, Max. 45 minutes)
- Post-lesson meeting with TAs, if necessary (Max.15 minutes)
- Tuesdays and Thursdays (April 2021 - June 2021)

【Salary】
・ ¥3,500 - ¥5,000/hour
- Salary determined depends on past work experiences and expertize.
- Transportation allowance is up to ¥25,000/Month.
