Description

If you are a dedicated, flexible teacher, or interested in learning to become one, come join our team at KA! We specialize in teaching returnee and bicultural children advanced English reading, writing, and speaking skills. You can enjoy teaching challenging and stimulating original material every day. We offer visa sponsorship, access to an employee recreation center (gym, billiards table, viewing room), as well as access to vacation properties in Atami and Hawaii. Children of employees are also invited to attend English classes at KA free of charge. We also have employee benefits such as Japanese lesson fee reimbursement. KA is a dynamic, challenging, and fun environment in which you can grow your career as an instructor.

New teachers at KA can expect to spend their first two weeks going through lesson plans, instructional videos, and class observations before moving on to co-teaching. After initial training, teachers begin solo teaching live lessons and continue working through KA's library of teaching resources. Graded observations for new teachers happen at monthly intervals for the first six months and the twice a year after that time. All KA Instructors undergo regular unreported observations for self-improvement benefit and can request additional observations.

A Day in the Life of a KA Instructor:

What is life like working for KA? On weekdays, KA instructors arrive at 1pm and participate in a ten-minute meeting where they discuss upcoming classes and the curriculum contained therein. Following the meeting, the instructors generally have two or three hours to prepare for their evening's and/or upcoming weekend's lessons.

The early evening usually consists of classes for elementary school students. Teachers check students' homework, then teach an hour of reading and vocabulary (created by KA for the specific needs of our students), followed by an hour of grammar and writing. The reading coursework consists of folktales, legends, short stories, novel excerpts, and a variety of non-fiction sources. The writing coursework centers around story writing, one-paragraph essay writing, five-paragraph essay writing, and book reports.

The later evening classes are generally for junior and senior high school students. The coursework includes advanced reading passages and test practice for the EIKEN, TOEFL, and SAT, as well as videos from TED, Youtube, and other media sources. Writing assignments are based on the reading passages and media sources.

The weekends generally start at 9am. They kick-off with a brief meeting and then instructors teach between five and seven 55-minute classes throughout the day. At the end of the shift, some instructors opt to hang out in our employee recreation center, others go out to dinner together, while many go home to their families. Each day is different to the next because all of our students are unique, and our classes change and expand.

Required Skills:

At KA, we seek persons with strong interpersonal skills. Applicants should have an interest in literature, personal growth, and childhood education and development. Experience with advanced test prep and/or early years phonics is preferred, but not necessary as our robust employee training programs engender the right candidates with the requisite skills. The most important quality we look for is motivation—motivation to help children learn and the motivation to help our community grow. Based on the nature of our educational approach, consistency is key for students (many instructors work with the same students for many years) and as such we preferentially select candidates who are willing to make multiple year commitments to our organization.
