Description

Uni-edit specializes in providing translation and English editing services to academia in Japan. Translators, PhD students, researchers and professors may apply.

Requirements:
- deep subject matter knowledge in an academic field (all fields required, but we have particular demand for medical, food science, agrochemistry, life sciences, biology and forestry)
- excellent Japanese reading skills and can read a journal article comfortably
- fluent or native English writing skills
- experience writing academic essays or research papers in English
- Intermediate Microsoft Word skills
- Able to work to strict deadlines and unsupervised
- Willing to work according to documented standards
- Willing to receive feedback and improve your translation skills

This work is freelance and the workload will fluctuate and be on a per document basis. You can work from your home or office.

Please apply with a Cover Letter in English including the instructions below.
Your application will be treated confidentially.

In your Application:
・ Include your English resume (an MS Word format may be later requested).
・ Include your academic qualifications.
・ Include your current employment and positions held.

In your Cover Letter:
・ Describe how much and what types of experience you have translating from Japanese to English.
・ Provide a detailed list of subject matter areas in which you are competent to translate for Japanese to English, separated by commas.
・ State your preferred range of rates (per Japanese character), or explain if you are flexible on the rates.

For selected candidates:
・ You will be asked for a sample of your own writing for an academic research paper in English, or a translation into English of an academic text.
・ Scans of your recent academic results.

Application process
We will review your application within about 3 weeks after receiving your application. If your background and skills indicate suitability, you will receive some information about working with Uni-edit for your further consideration. Next, applicants are asked to perform an unpaid test translation. The test can be done at your own pace. Your test effort will be appraised by the Uni-edit team. Applicants whose test demonstrates the skills Uni-edit is looking for are offered an opportunity. You will receive further documented information about the details of the working arrangement and orientation training. We will then schedule a 15-min orientation phone call so that we can know each other personally and to discuss the working arrangement and answer any questions you might have. Uni-edit looks to build long-term relationships with editors and translators based on trust, a positive approach, and professionalism.
