About the role

The Country Manager, Japan (CM-JP) is responsible for leading the BLR Group entity (BLR-JP), currently being established in Japan. The CM-JP is accountable for the overall performance of the business within the country, including business development, marketing and communications, operations, finance and administration, as well as overseeing the successful delivery of multiple live projects. The CM-JP reports to the General Manager, Global Businesses (GM-GB) and works closely with the executives of the BLR Group and wider senior management teams to develop and execute a growth strategy within the JP market and ensure that BLR-JP is meeting its business objectives.


Key Responsibilities

-Manage all aspects of BLR-JP day-to-day operations, including marketing, business strategy, sales and business development, project management, Human Resources, finance and administration
-Establish and grow productive working relationships with external stakeholders, partners and other relevant bodies to ensure the long-term sustainability of BLR-JP.
-Oversee the development and implementation of processes to ensure efficient and effective company operations
-Act as the key liaison point between BLR-JP and BLR Group.
-Develop and implement business strategies that align with the overall goals and objectives of The BLR Group
-Lead, motivate and manage teams of professionals to achieve business goals
-Manage budgets and finances of BLR-JP, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and efficiently
-Represent the Company by serving as the face of BLR-JP in a confident and professional manner, building a positive image and reputation for BLR-JP
-Actively contribute to continuous improvements of project management processes and methodologies
-Ensure the efficient and economic management of the BLR-JP’s work, including the monitoring and mitigation of risk.
-Ensure the Company’s compliance with Japanese financial, legal, ethical and other obligations, as well as best practice.
Accountable for making sure that the Company’s operations are executed in such a manner as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all employees and others who may be affected by its operations.


Governance and Compliance

- Act as company secretary and nominated representative for BLR-JP.
-Maintain the seal in our Japan office in accordance with rules for its use and storage.
-Oversee policies, making sure they are kept up-to-date and referred to the Board of BLR-JP for approval.
-Maintain statutory books, including registers of members, directors and secretaries.
-Supervise completion of annual statutory report/audit and its filing to relevant authorities.
-Monitor changes in relevant Japanese legislation and the regulatory environment and take appropriate action.
-Liaise with external regulators and advisers, such as lawyers and auditors.
-Oversee the systems that ensure BLR-JP complies with all applicable codes, in addition to its legal and statutory requirements.
-Maintain and regularly review a register of company risks, and their mitigations.
-Maintain an overview of tax administration in conjunction with external tax consultants.


Candidate Requirements

Knowledge
-Good knowledge of Japanese GAAP Knowledge of Japanese tax regulations and UK GAAP would be an advantage
-Knowledge of JP employment law and HR systems would be beneficial
-Sound knowledge of local businesses in relevant sectors
-Exposure to HR, Recruitment, Training or Operations essential

Experience
-Start-up experience, growing / developing business in an entrepreneurial environment would be beneficial
-Business Management and Client and/or Team Management experience
-Sector experience to include Culture, Events, Hospitality, Leisure or Tourism
-Experience facilitating cross cultural business/projects
-Additional wider Asia / international experience would also be beneficial

-Excellent written and spoken English, proficient to a high business language standard.
-Excellent written and spoken Japanese, proficient to a high business language standard.
-Ability to work collaboratively in a complex and developing environment.

Location & Commitments

-Tokyo or Osaka-based, with some national and international travel
-Hours per week to be mutually agreed
-Eligible to hold or acquire residency status in Japan
