Kansai International Academy (KIA) is currently seeking experienced ESL teachers to start immediately for the 2019-2020 academic year at our Kobe campus, one of thirteen around the Kansai and Kanto regions. We offer bilingual education to children living in Japan. This position is competitive in terms of salary, benefits, and conditions. Our school campus is located in Kobe and is an IB World School offering the Primary Years Programme. Our school was the first in the world offering the PYP bilingually in Japanese and English. The Kobe campus also has a kindergarten as well as a secondary school that is a candidate school for the IB Diploma Programme.
We are not an English conversation school. We teach in English (together with Japanese) rather than teaching only English, so applicants must be aware of the challenges associated with holistic education as opposed to pure language instruction and be proactive about their own professional development. KIA is looking to employ six qualified educators as full-time ESL teachers, having one in each of the six grades that make up our elementary school. Contact will involve up to three fifty-minute English periods each day, five times per week. The ESL teacher works in a co-teacher role together with the respective homeroom teacher and often works specifically with students requiring additional and remedial English support. The ESL teacher will also attend at least one collaborative grade meeting per week and must be available for other classes and duties, such as a weekly elective class or recess responsibilities, for example. All staff join weekly staff meetings, professional development sessions, and school assemblies and may also lead specific school events throughout the academic year.
We invite candidates who are serious about improving students’ English ability and enabling their participation in all areas of school life as well as promoting full access to the KIA curriculum. Our elementary school requires all applicants to possess a teaching license. Preference will also be given to those professionals who have teaching and collaborative planning experience, understand differentiation and have an awareness and desire to work within the inquiry-based International Baccalaureate (IB) education framework. A clear understanding of curriculum development and a proven ability to address the needs of Japanese learners of English is also key. The successful candidate must be highly personable and adaptable and have strong problem-solving skills with a clear record of educational success in the classroom.
The ESL teacher’s role entails the following responsibilities:
- Participate actively in grade-level planning meetings and plan collaboratively with homeroom teachers (including developing learning objectives and formative and summative assessments).
- Differentiate English class content and apply suitable scaffolding techniques.
- Record student performance and grades, including in-class anecdotal evidence on students’ language use.
- Make recommendations for further language support to homeroom teachers and the ESL Coordinator.
- Ensure a positive learning atmosphere and an inquiry-based approach to lessons as much as possible.
- Create a classroom that is a safe space for all students to experiment with language while expressing their identities and ideas.
- Ensure students have sufficient opportunities to apply and reflect upon their language learning.
- Provide opportunities for students to extend and apply their learning beyond the classroom, both in the wider school environment and at home.
- Promote general English use and interest in learning the language in school.
- Contribute to the English Curriculum and KIA Language Policy.
