Description

NOTE: This job application requires a personalized cover letter answering the questions given in the job description. Any applications without a personalized cover letter will be discarded.

SEG is a juku for junior and senior high school students which is well-known for teaching English through extensive reading and oral communication. We have openings for full-time and semi-full-time native English teachers in our oral communication and writing program beginning in March or April 2017. While we are a juku, we do not focus on test preparation. We have a dynamic and communicative program which is based on modern principles of second language acquisition. We’re looking for teachers who are interested in language teaching as a long-term career and who are interested in professional development and learning new skills.

Requirements:
NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER
Bachelor's degree or higher
TESL/TEFL Certificate
At least two years' experience as an English teacher
Currently residing in Japan with valid work visa

Responsibilities:
Teaching English to junior and senior high school students
Creating materials for lessons
Designing tests

Contract period: March or April 2017 to February 2018 (renewable)

Working Hours: 13:00-21:30 including one hour break

Days Off: Sunday and one particular weekday (excluding Saturday)

Annual paid vacation days: 23 days per year
(Holidays are subject to certain restrictions. This will be explained during the interview process.)

Pay: 300,000 yen to 360,000 yen per month
(3,600, 000 yen to 4,320,000 yen per year)

Nearest station: Shinjuku or Yokohama

If you are interested in the position, please write us a personalized cover letter answering the following questions about a potential class at SEG. In your answers, please bear in mind that we’re looking for teachers who are skilled at demonstrating the meaning of vocabulary and grammatical constructions in a concrete and meaningful context as opposed to explaining concepts abstractly.

Assume that you are teaching an 80-minute lesson to a group of 1st year junior high school students. They have been learning English for less than one year and they are being introduced to the present perfect for the first time. You may assume that the students have already been exposed to the concepts of present simple, present continuous, past simple and past continuous, although they will not have been taught those grammatical terms. We don’t use grammatical terminology in our lessons, so you should avoid using terms like verb, participle, or even present perfect.

1) Given this situation, which usage of the present perfect would you choose to focus on in this lesson and why would you choose that usage as opposed to the others?

2) How would you present or demonstrate the usage of the present perfect that you chose in your answer to question 1?

3) What sort of activities would you do in order to practice the usage of the present perfect that you selected?

4) What would you expect students to be able to do at the end of the class?

Candidates who pass this initial screening will be invited to come and do a demo lesson at SEG in Shinjuku.

Thank you for your application.
