説明

Thank you for your interest in the position of full time English Teacher.

Hiroshima Johoku Gakuen is a private boys’ school, grades 7 through 12 and co-ed kindergarten, located in Hesaka, Hiroshima City. The school places a strong emphasis upon academic and professional excellence and continually produces graduates who attend some of the most prestigious universities in the country and abroad. From 2021 a course directed solely to students wishing to embark on a career in medicine will begin and each year we have a number of students that receive scholarships for their academic performance.

From April 2021, a full-time position has become available for an enthusiastic, motivated, and creative teacher of English. Initially, this position will be on a one-year contract basis. After positive evaluations a tenured position may be offered after three years.

Teaching will include a maximum of twenty hours per-week across a range of grades. In the junior high school, the teacher will be involved in the development of a student centered, research-based syllabus as part of an Integrated Studies through English/Inquiry course. In the high school, the teacher will be involved in English Communication and Writing courses. Involvement in these courses will be challenging but rewarding and offer ample opportunities for creative input.

The successful applicant will also have homeroom and year group responsibilities and be expected to participate in overseas short-term programs (post COVID), community projects, and club activities. Working hours are from 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday and 8:30am to 1:00pm, three Saturdays a month. Generally, the second Saturday of each month is a day off. In addition to national holidays, the successful applicant will also be eligible for 20 paid holiday days a year. Unused holidays can be rolled over into the following year up to a maximum of 40 days.

Applicants must:
• possess a university B.A./B.S./B.Ed. (or equivalent).
• have a minimum of three years teaching experience in Japanese junior and/or senior high
school and a strong background in ESL / EFL.
• be able to contribute to curriculum / syllabus development.
• demonstrate an ability to be able to work individually and as part of a team.
• be comfortable using technology in the classroom.
• be comfortable teaching class sizes of between 18 and 40 students.
• currently reside in Japan and be eligible to work.

In addition, applicants with a teaching qualification from their home country, and/or a professional qualification in the field of English as a Second/Foreign Language and conversational Japanese will be favored.

A base annual salary in the region of 4,300,000 yen, plus allowances, will be paid in the first year. Following positive evaluations, this will increase to 4,600,000 yen in the second year and 4,750,000 yen in the third. Annual increments will follow thereafter; a tenured position will offer additional benefits.

If you feel that you are suited to this position, please apply with a cover letter (see below for more information about the cover letter). Applications received before 5pm on October 20th will be considered.

We look forward to receiving your information and contacting you in the near future.

The Management Team
Hiroshima Johoku Gakuen

SEE BELOW FOR GUIDANCE ABOUT YOUR COVER LETTER

For your cover letter, we would like to know a little about you, your interests and experiences in teaching. We would like to ask you to submit a letter in support of your application briefly outlining these and identifying what makes you an ideal fit for our school. Of course, in order for you to be able to do this, you first need to know more about Hiroshima Johoku, the position, and the team that you will be working in.

To give you an overview, there are approximately 1,200 students in the junior and senior high school and our campus is located in Hiroshima City, in the suburb of Hesaka. Further information, and a current prospectus can be found in Japanese on our website. There is also a simple English site aimed at providing general information for foreign visitors.

In addition to general teacher responsibilities outlined above, the position is unique, given the nature of the courses we run. In the junior high school, each grade receives two hours of ‘Discovery’ a week. The Discovery course was developed to meet government (MEXT) guidelines for 総合的な学習, soon to become 総合的な探究の時間 the aims of which are to develop:

• The four skills of English
• Problem identification and solving skills
• Critical thinking skills
• Independent learning & thinking skills
• Co-operative learning skills
• Research skills

Lessons are taught in original thematic blocks and courses, therefore an ability to design an interesting curriculum and stimulating lessons is essential. The curriculum is delivered through English. To aid student understanding we have dedicated classrooms that leverage technology and are conducive to an all-English learning environment. Specifically, all students have their own tablets and rooms are equipped with screens, whiteboards etc., and have flexible seating arrangements allowing for individual or group work. Lessons are enhanced by, but not dependent upon, technology and traditional teaching methods are also used. Images of the school facilities can be found on the homepage.

In the senior high school, our first-year students take part in a one-hour a week Oral Communication course that aims to develop conversation strategies that enable students to hold confident conversations in English. This course is supplemented by online English Conversation lessons.

In the second-grade students take a one-hour a week English Writing course. This course has been tailored to develop essay-writing competence in preparation for external English examinations such as GTEC, and university entrance examinations.

The successful applicant will be the sixth member of foreign staff in an English department of approximately twenty. In addition to weekly departmental meetings, the foreign staff also meet weekly to discuss, review and develop course material, curriculum and generate ideas. The staff work closely together, offering constructive criticism and support to each other in a professional, but relaxed environment.

We appreciate that writing a cover letter is a time-consuming process and thank you in advance.

Upon being shortlisted you will be invited to take part in an interview in late October or early November. Details to follow.
