Description

IMPORTANT:
- Your cover letter must be specific to this listing, refer to the requirements therein and explain what attracts you to the job. If you do not receive a reply to your application, it will be because you have not done this.

- Employment will start straight away. While the minimum contract period will be 1 year, candidates interested in longer term employment will be preferred.

What we do is very different from anything you will have done before. The lessons we provide are dynamic, fun and achieve real results but you need particular qualities in order to be effective in the classroom.

You need to have a good ear for what sounds natural and what doesn't. When you teach you will need to be able to explain why something is right or wrong using language at a level the students can understand. You will need to understand why we usually say, 'I'm having dinner with some friends this evening.' rather than, 'This evening I will have dinner with my friends.' and the difference between the articles 'a/an' and 'the' and how they relate to the pronouns 'one' and 'it'. Even if you are not able to do these things but are willing to learn, and have the aptitude, you could be just the person we are looking for.

What kind of person do you need to be? We are looking for someone who enjoys teaching and finds it worthwhile and interesting. Above all, someone who wants to make a real difference in enabling students to use English effectively in everyday situations, while travelling or in business. You need to be responsive and quick thinking; someone who will bring energy, enthusiasm and expertise to the classroom and who thrives on the reward of learner progress. You need to be a good listener and good communicator and naturally able to make people feel at ease. That you need to be reliable and conscientious goes without saying. In return we can offer you considerable job satisfaction as well as real and continuing improvement in your teaching skills.

Who are we? We are the Speak Your Mind School, Yoyogi Hachiman, located in the Shibuya area of Tokyo. The school was established in 1997 and has grown mostly by word-of-mouth. We have around 115 students, with nearly 20% of them having studied with us for 5 years or more. Students stay with us for an average of 3½ years. The most common remark we hear from new students is how enjoyable the lessons are. Students stay with us because of the effectiveness of those lessons, which is due to their structure, the systematic and speaking-based approach of the Speak Your Mind method and the skill of our teachers. For complete information about the Speak Your Mind English course, and videos of lessons, please go to www.symenglish.com

We have recently built a new school after having outgrown our old one. The new school, being purpose-built, is pleasant to work in and the atmosphere bright and friendly. We teach mainly adult professionals from complete beginner to advanced levels.

Working with us starts with an intensive 35-hour training course designed to introduce you to all aspects of the Speak Your Mind English course: You will learn about the history and development of the method, the worldwide network of schools and the theory underlining the teaching course but most importantly you will get lots of practice using the material with volunteer students. You will be very busy as there is a lot to learn. You will be paid for this training and on successful completion of the course you will be taken on for a probationary period of 2 months. At the end of this, providing you show yourself to be reliable and able, you will be given a 1-year contract. Training doesn't stop there, though, as becoming a better teacher is a lifelong process. We offer career development (to course director, school manager) to those so inclined and suited.

We open from Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings.

You will be available from 18:30 (occasionally from 17:30) to 21:30 on weekdays. Starting salary, once your contract begins, will be ¥114,400 pm, working up to a maximum of 16 hours a week, rising to ¥134,000 pm, depending on skill and experience.

No lesson preparation is necessary outside working hours. We are closed on Sundays and public holidays. We normally close for a few days around Golden Week, Obon and the New Year.

We also pay twice yearly bonuses based on your and the school's performance and up to 10,000 yen a month towards your travelling expenses. Statutory paid holidays and accident insurance (rosai hoken) are included.

We aim to start training as soon as possible, with the probationary period starting immediately afterwards and contracted employment straight after that.
