Looking for motivated teachers to join us for challenging, engaging English language arts and writing courses - specifically tailored for students who have lived abroad or attended international schools. Work with some of the brightest students, many of whom are native or near-native English speakers, and help them to build vocabulary and writing skills as well as literary aptitude in preparation to test into special returnee programs at some of Japan's most prestigious private junior high schools.
Teach 2 to 2.5 hours of classes + at least 30 min (often much more, depending on enrollment) of paid marking for essays/written responses per shift, either in the mornings or afternoons (or both) on Saturday or Sunday. Class sizes are anywhere from around 3 to 12 students. Some classes are taught online via Zoom. Most classes are onsite, taught on "electronic whiteboards" with a mix of on-site and online students.
Courses taught include:
- 5th Grade vocabulary & basic essay writing
- 6th Grade advanced essay writing & reading comprehension
- 6th Grade English Language Arts (creative writing / essays / literature)
- 6th Grade poetry & literature
Lesson plans and materials are provided, and some additional pay is offered for preparation to review the materials before class.
Duration: March through the following January, w/ breaks in August and at year-end/New Year
Locations: Senzoku-Ike and Tama Plaza stations
Pay rates--
Teaching: 4,000 yen/hour (3,500/hr for first month) + annual raises often provided for good performance
Marking: 4,000 yen/hour
Preparation: 1,050 yen/class session
Full round-trip transport also reimbursed
Additional work opportunities offered to our weekend teachers who demonstrate strong capability:
-Weeklong courses in summer
-Additional opportunities to mark essays
-"Entrance interview practice" sessions in fall/winter
The ideal candidate has either worked in some capacity at a respected private or international school in Japan, has ample experience marking and instruction advanced essay writing, and/or has been a schoolteacher in an English-speaking country. However, high-performing, motivated teachers without such experience but with a strong teaching track record and motivation for personal growth are also welcome.
