English Instructor (Private and Small Group Lessons) (expired)

Opened in 2018, Newtalk has established itself as a leading English provider in Kobe. We seek to ultimately redefine the concept of what it means to be an “eikaiwa (英会話)” in Japan. We are currently at our capacity and looking to bring someone into the team to help with growth.

Our methodology combines traditional and modern approaches to language learning. We provide a carefully built mix of input and output for students to advance their English in the fastest way possible. While lessons are taught mostly in English, we seek an individual with some experience in learning Japanese. At Newtalk, we believe that instructors should be equipped with some level of Japanese, in order to be able to understand the language learning process and properly explain language concepts from a Japanese perspective. Necessary language training will be provided. We are looking for someone with a positive, proactive and motivated mindset.


RESPONSIBILITES
Instructor responsibilities are separated into two categories, lesson and business.

Lesson
Follow the newtalk curriculum to ensure that students excel in all areas of language learning (speaking, pronunciation, listening, confidence, writing, reading, grammar and vocabulary). This involves:
• Teaching 45-minute lessons (most lessons are private lessons)
• Creating custom content for each student in preparation for lessons
• Assigning targeted input to help with grammar and vocabulary acquisition
• Dealing with student questions and checking in with students on their progress via LINE during teaching hours
• Explaining English grammar, vocabulary and expressions from a Japanese perspective and in Japanese when necessary (necessary training will be provided)
• Maintaining lesson records and creating occasional progress reports for students
• Managing student relationships and overseeing the advancement of each student the instructor is in charge of

Business
In addition to teaching lessons, we expect instructors to be able to take on responsibilities related to maintaining and growing the school. These responsibilities include:
• Training (lesson or business related)
• Participating in events and helping out with preparation (after COVID-19 settles)
• Marking written assignments when necessary
• Holding seminars or webinars on language learning and culture topics
• Helping with content production (on social media including Instagram, podcasts, YouTube videos, blog posts etc.)
• Occasional cleaning (vacuuming, wiping tables, watering plants)


SCHEDULE
Instructor schedules are for 37.5 hours per week, 7 hours and 30 minutes per day (within 9 hour blocks each day)
(Instructors are asked to be available for nine hours a day, five days a week.)
Working days will be decided upon hiring.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
We offer a competitive monthly starting salary of ¥300,000 with an increase to ￥350,000 after one year of employment. Opt to teach lessons outside of your contracted schedule and maximize your earning potential. Newtalk offers a per-lesson (45-minute lesson) rate of ¥2,300.

Instructors will be given a monthly public transportation allowance of a variable amount, depending on the residence of the instructor.

Optional time off is given for all Japanese public holidays (approximately 15 days a year) as well as company holidays including Christmas Day. Instructors can choose to work these days for a per-less (45-minute lesson) rate of ￥2,300.

Ten days of paid vacation are earned after completing six months of the contract. The number of paid vacation days given increases each year the longer you stay with Newtalk.
