Situated in the heart of Tokyo, The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST) is a well-established Montessori school offering a vibrant and fresh vision of education for your child.
MST boasts bright and spacious classrooms and a well-stocked library containing well over 8,000 volumes. We’re also proud to have one of the largest gardens in central Tokyo, where children care for their own fruit, flowers and vegetables, and enjoy learning in the natural environment provided.
We strive to engender in all students, a love of learning and an acceptance of personal responsibility for intellectual growth and social interaction. This is reflected in our mission statement, “Stimulating curiosity while developing independence in thought and action”. Our core values of Confidence, Respect and Compassion represent the characteristics we instill and uphold in our administration, faculty and student body.
The Montessori philosophy is based on a profound respect for each child as a unique human being. Our approach assumes that children are born intelligent, curious and creative and are ripe to develop a sense of wonder and imagination. Montessori is designed to teach children to think deeply, to think for themselves and to think about others.
The Montessori “three hour work period” allows children time to explore material at their own pace and make new discoveries daily. We have been offering this truly child-centered, high-quality Montessori curriculum to Tokyo families for over a decade.
MST is a close-knit community of close to 100 families with children ranging from 2 to 14 years old. Our truly international community represents over 30 countries from every corner of the globe. We are lucky to have a vibrant parent community, contributing to the cultural, recreational and educational enrichment of life at MST. Our fully trained and experienced faculty is drawn from 5 continents and further reflects the diversity of our MST family.
Enrichment opportunities abound here, from athletic competitions to school musicals, and art exhibitions to science fairs. Our annual Elementary camping and ski trips give our students a chance to enjoy the great outdoors, build strong relationships and learn new skills. Our biennial involvement in the Montessori “Model United Nations” in New York City is an unmatchable learning experience.
We foster an awareness of community service through interaction with local homes for the elderly, by routinely cleaning our local streets and collecting rice donations annually to support a local food charity.
In 2010, the MST community raised funds to build a school in rural Cambodia. This is a long term project that allows us to support an education for children far less fortunate than our own. We provide annual funding for materials, maintenance, teacher salaries and facility upgrades and share feedback with our students as they follow the impact of the money they have raised.
The Montessori School of Tokyo is accredited by the International Montessori Council and a member of the Japan Council of International Schools. Please visit our website to find out more.
